Punishment & Torture

⚠ Warning: This post contains information that some of you may find horribly disturbing 🙈 🙉 🙊 Hence, proceed with caution. ⚠

The word 'torture' comes from the French 'torture', originating in the Late Latin 'tortura' and ultimately deriving the past participle of 'torquere' meaning 'to twist'.

Throughout history, there have been many instances and records of torture and punishment taking place in various empires, civilisations and dynasties for incidents such as crime, adultery or treason. Hence, it has come to the point that torture and punishment are regarded to go hand in hand, as torture constitutes to a form of punishment. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, torture is defined as “the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something”, while punishment is defined as “the infliction or imposition of a penalty as retribution for an offence”. Essentially, torture is a form of punishment that is meted out on a person or persons as a result of his or her actions. Our blog post will be explaining the various forms of punishment and torture, specifically in the Middle Ages. Whether or not these forms of punishment and torture were meted out justly, well, one can only speculate based on the erroneous and superstitious judicial system of that age.
